Henna Art Project – Preserving Culture, Creating Opportunities

The Somaliweyn Relief Agency (SRA) Farm Project is a three-month community agriculture initiative that empowers vulnerable families through sustainable farming. The project provides practical training in modern agricultural techniques while enabling participants to grow nutritious crops such as maize, watermelon, and melons.

Implemented in two phases—from land preparation and planting to crop management, harvesting, and food sharing—the project helps improve food security, strengthen household livelihoods, and build long-term farming skills. Participants gain hands-on experience in soil preparation, irrigation, crop care, and sustainable farming practices that they can continue using beyond the project.

The harvest is shared among participating families, ensuring access to fresh, healthy food while promoting community cooperation and resilience. Through this initiative, Somaliweyn Relief Agency is investing in self-reliance, sustainable agriculture, and stronger, healthier communities.

Sewing Project – Stitching Skills, Building Futures

Program Highlights

The Somaliweyn Relief Agency (SRA) Sewing Skills Project is a three-month vocational training program designed to equip individuals with practical sewing and tailoring skills that lead to sustainable employment and financial independence.

Every three months, 10 participants complete the program, with 30 students graduating each year. Throughout the training, participants receive hands-on instruction in sewing techniques, fabric selection, pattern making, garment construction, and textile craftsmanship. By the end of the program, graduates have the skills and confidence to start their own tailoring businesses or secure employment in the fashion and garment industry.

To help graduates begin earning an income immediately, Somaliweyn Relief Agency provides each graduate with a brand-new sewing machine. This investment removes one of the biggest barriers to self-employment and enables participants to transform their new skills into sustainable livelihoods.

More than a vocational training program, the Sewing Skills Project creates lasting opportunities for individuals and families. Graduates not only improve their own economic well-being but also contribute to their communities by creating clothing, offering tailoring services, mentoring others, and inspiring future entrepreneurs.

The project combines cultural preservation with vocational training, equipping participants with professional henna art skills that can lead to sustainable income and self-employment.

Operating in both Somalia and the United States, the program welcomes participants of all ages and introduces them to the history, cultural significance, and artistic techniques of traditional henna design. Through hands-on training, students develop creativity, confidence, and practical skills that can be used to earn a livelihood in the beauty industry.

Program Highlights

Established: 2021

Locations: Somalia and the United States

Somalia Program: Weekly classes over a 3–4 month training cycle

Training Centers: 4 cities across Somalia

Students in Somalia: 25 students per city (100 students per training cycle)

Beyond teaching artistic techniques, the project promotes entrepreneurship by helping participants transform their talents into income-generating opportunities. Many graduates use their skills to provide henna services for weddings, celebrations, and community events, contributing to their financial independence and supporting their families.

The Henna Art Project reflects Somaliweyn Relief Agency’s commitment to preserving Somali cultural heritage while empowering communities through education, creativity, and sustainable livelihoods.

The Somaliweyn Relief Agency Henna Art Project is a cultural and vocational training program offered every four months in Somalia. The project teaches participants the traditional art of henna while helping them develop creative skills, build self-confidence, and preserve an important part of Somali cultural heritage.

Through hands-on instruction, participants learn professional henna design techniques that can be used for weddings, celebrations, and community events. Beyond artistic expression, the program equips participants with practical skills that can create income-generating opportunities in the beauty industry, supporting economic independence and stronger livelihoods.

By combining culture, creativity, and skills development, the Henna Art Project empowers individuals to celebrate their heritage while building a brighter future.

School Supplies Program

School Supplies At Somaliweyn Relief Agency (SRA), we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, regardless of their circumstances. Through our School Supplies Program, we provide essential educational materials to 400 students each year, helping remove financial barriers that prevent children from succeeding in school.

The majority of the students we support are orphans and children from vulnerable families who often lack access to basic school supplies. By providing backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, and other essential learning materials, we ensure that students begin the school year prepared, confident, and ready to learn.

Education is one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty. By investing in children’s education today, we are helping build brighter futures for individuals, families, and communities.

Clean Water Program

Providing Life-Saving Water to Communities in Need

  • Somalia faces recurring droughts and severe water shortages, making access to safe drinking water a daily challenge for many families. With limited rivers and water sources, communities—especially pastoralist families who depend on livestock for their livelihoods—often struggle to find clean and affordable water during the dry season.
  • When drought conditions worsen, many families are forced to rely on water delivered by trucks. However, the high cost of transported water places an enormous burden on already vulnerable households, leaving many without sufficient access to this basic necessity.
  • To help address this urgent need, Somaliweyn Relief Agency (SRA) provides fresh, clean water to drought-affected communities during the dry season. Since 2022, SRA has delivered more than 300,000 gallons of water to families impacted by drought, helping protect lives, support livestock, and reduce the hardship caused by water scarcity.

Program Impact

300,000+ gallons of clean water delivered since 2022

Supporting drought-affected families and communities

Providing emergency water during the dry season

Helping reduce the burden of costly water access

Protecting health, livelihoods, and community well-being

While this assistance has made a significant difference, the need remains great. Many families continue to face severe water shortages, and ongoing support is essential to ensure that vulnerable communities have access to safe drinking water during times of crisis.

At Somaliweyn Relief Agency, we are committed to providing life-saving water assistance and helping communities build resilience against the devastating effects of drought. Together, we can bring hope, health, and dignity to families facing water scarcity.
